![]() ![]() ![]() If someone who knows practically nothing about shmups wants to dip their toe, I recommend: Shmups that offer some challenge but don't feel impossible. Shmups that will not frustrate new players at all. I feel shmups for beginners can be broken down into three catagories: Other great shmups are Blue Revolver, Hellsinker or Blue Wish Resurrection, which I haven't played but are loved by the community and are pretty accessible.įinally some of my favorites are of course Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun, which have multiple difficulty options, making them pretty accessible, while having really unique and fun gameplay and amazing visuals + sound. If you are looking for verticals that aren't danmaku you can try Raystorm/Layer Section, which is tough but extremely fun to play, or you can try games like Eschatos or Zero Ranger (this one is kinda danmaku at times but isn't really a danmaku game). A horizontal danmaku I love is Progear, so I recommend you try that one too! If you are looking for a horizontal shmups you can try Gradius Gaiden even though its a pretty tough game, or you can play Dariusburst Chronicle Saviors (or Dariusburst SP) since it has really fun horizontal gameplay with a non traditional artstyle but conventional gameplay. Other great introductory shmups are Cho Ren Sha 68k or Judgement Silversword, since those aren't that bullet heavy or as difficult as Cave's shmups while being really fun and having a pretty good difficulty curve.īesides those people generally recommend either to begin with Touhou or Crimzon Clover, since those games have plenty of difficulty options to choose from (at least in Touhou, haven't played Crimzon Clover lmao). When it comes to bullet hell/danmaku games you have Bullet Hell Monday Finale on mobile, which is one of the best danmaku for beginners since it's a shmup that has levels to complete one by one, instead of having a full 1cc longplay to complete, making it extremely accessible and honestly really good to play in quick bursts. I have no comment on horizontals, since I don't really play those much.ĭepending on the sub genre you are looking for you have a bunch of options. Jet Buster's emphasis on really big bullets makes it easier for players to not get lost and overwhelmed in all the chaos that the game throws at you, that and learning to score is tied to the unlockable shop, so it gets people an incentive to get into the high score mindset. Ten & Till has such a gradual difficulty curve that eases players into the game and throws challenges that should be on par with their skill by section. Ginga Force is probably the hardest one on this list but its mission-based structure makes the task of improving less intimidating to the average joe due to extra lives stacking per level and having clear goals on what the game considers desirable actions. ZeroRanger has a moderate difficulty but really makes the player feel they're acomplishing things little by little thanks to the excellent continue system, that and just being a bloody good game. Same could be said for Espgaluda since its one of the easier Cave games that are a bit more difficult than Mushi Novice but help the player ease into it thanks to Kakusei mode. Mushihime-sama & Futari's Novice original modes are a good at introducing Bullet Hells to the average player due to being really well designed for beginners in mind and are also great for people that are more used to the classic type of shmups. A good game for beginners should be like that, simple, easy to understand and fun to play.Īll around and if you have weeb tendencies Touhou game are honestly great introductions to shmups as a whole due to teaching you the fundamentals of the genre. ![]() These games were insanely popular when they came out, which means that most people could understand how to play and enjoy the gameplay. Since it’s a study, check out space invaders (arcade or console games) and river raid (Atari 2600). PlayStation: a) einhander - excellent game, not too difficult Turbographx 16: a) blazing lazers - this console has a ton of great shmups, but they are usually hard ![]() Super Nintendo: a) axelay, b) space megaforce (aka super aleste) - Snes shmups are usually plagued by slowdown, but it’s not the case of these two games, which run smoothly Sega genesis: a) thunder force 3, b) raiden - they are not the best, but they are fair enough to beginners They don’t have complex scoring systems and are easier than arcade games, but usually they are still hard in comparison to mainstream games: So I don’t think that bullet hell shmups are a good idea for beginners, at least to most people.įor beginners I suggest games originally designed for the console market, specially in the 8-16 bit era, when they focused on very young players. It’s hard to spot your ship/vehicle and some people get confused by so many bullets at the screen. Beginners usually don’t like games which feature dozens of objects flying everywhere. ![]()
